WELCOME TO 5th GRADE SCIENCE

Hello Parents, Guardians, and Students. This year your student will have an entire core devoted to the study of the world around us and how it works: SCIENCE!

The topics for the year will roughly breakdown in the following ways:

August – November: BIOLOGY AND LIFE SCIENCE
December – January: SCIENCE FAIR
January – March: GEOLOGY AND EARTH SCIENCE
March – May: PHYSICAL SCIENCE

Your student’s grade will be determined by the following criteria:

Daily Work – This will consist of a variety of in class activities, assignments, experiments, and group projects. Daily work is worth 40-percent of your student’s grade.

Homework – This will be any work assigned which needs to be brought home in order to be completed. This will usually be practice worksheets, science writing assignments, and occasionally an extended project. I will accept late homework for up to one week after the due date of the missed assignment, however a letter grade will be deducted for each day it is late (e.g. one day late is worth a B, two days late is worth a C, etc). Homework is worth 25-percent of your student’s grade.

Quizzes and Tests – This will be any type of assessment assignment your student will complete. This could include traditional written quizzes and tests or could include completion of a unit long project. Quizzes and Tests are worth 25-percent of your student’s grade.

Participation and Citizenship – This will be your student’s behavior and conduct in the classroom. Participation and Citizenship is worth 10-percent of your student’s grade.
