Hello parents, guardians, and students :)
Your student is nearing the completion of the 5th grade life science unit. We have studied the five kingdoms of life, with a focus on the plant and animal kingdoms. This month we will be studying how these biotic factors interact with the abiotic factors in the environment around them.
We will also begin choosing topics for the upcoming science fair. The due dates will break down as follows:
November 23, 2010 - Science fair topic will be chosen (Students will have access to multiple science fair idea books and they may also get ideas from television, sources online, etc.). I will need to sign off on all topics.
November 30, 2010 - The science fair purpose / question will be submitted.
December 6, 2010 - Trifold poster board due.
December 7, 2010 - A hypothesis will be submitted.
December 10, 2010 - A list of materials needed for this experiment will be submitted.
December 14, 2010 - A detailed procedure list will be submitted.
December 16, 2010 - Data tables and graphs will be submitted.
Winter break December 20 to January 3 - Experiment phase will be completed.
January 5, 2011 - Collected data from experiment will be plugged into set up data tables and graphs.
January 6, 2011 - Rough draft of conclusion will be submitted.
January 10, 2011 - Final draft of conclusion will be submitted.
January 11, 2011 - Completed final project due.
If your student would like to partner with another student for science fair I will need a permission slip filled out from both students' parents or guardians.
We will be holding a school wide middle school science fair sometime in February (date still to be determined). I will send home more information concerning this before winter break.
